Student outreach
We would be remiss if we did not think of our future and the future of the Jewish community at large. One of our responsibilities as a philanthropic organization is to think about Jewish youth, as they are the next generation of leaders. Since 1976 adults at Hatzilu have been working to help Jewish people in need in Nassau County. But who will continue this legacy? It is our duty to teach the next generation. L'dor v'dor- from generation to generation. The best way to transmit the mitzvah and responsibility of helping others is by involving students in the important work that we at Hatzilu do.
There are three areas of student outreach currently connected to Hatzilu. College students in various local university Hillels have been involved in the past and continue to be connected to us . High School students volunteer their time occasionally. We also offer the Hatzilu B'nai Mitzvah Program as an excellent introduction to Hatzilu and to helping others.
A few years ago, Fiona Kerin, president of the Hillel at Adelphi University, served on our Board of Trustees. Since then Fiona has graduated and moved out of Nassau County, yet Fiona still comes once a year to help at the annual walkathon. Today both Adelphi University Hillel and C.W. Post Hillel have disbanded due to a decrease in the Jewish population, but Hofstra still has a very vibrant Hillel. The Hillel at Hofstra University has been involved with Hatzilu in the past and its leader, Rabbi Mitelman, feels that Hatzilu can expect a greater involvement in the future.
High school students are welcome to get involved. They can run fundraisers like a bake sale, a Chanukah wrapping paper sale, a Passover chocolate sale, a car wash, etc. Seniors who drive can do jobs like transporting bags from the Oceanside Trader Joe's (TJ's) to our warehouse. We now have an arrangement whereby we get a donation of 300 TJ paper bags at the start of every month. Those TJ bags are heavy. High school kids that live in Oceanside, South Baldwin, or any of the towns near Oceanside might be the best candidates for this job, as it saves older people who are more likely to have health issues from having to lug heavy articles. Occasionally there are large food drives at local synagogues and the food collected needs to be transported to our warehouse. This is another good job for high school students.
A few years ago, we launched the Hatzilu B'nai Mitzvah Program. This program is designed for 6th and 7th grade students who are studying for their Bar or Bat Mitzvah and would like to help those in need. More on the Hatzilu B'nai Mitzvah Program
